February 25, 2012: 8:30 AM - 3:00 PM, NJBA Winter Meeting, Rutgers EcoComplex, 1200 Florence-Columbus Road, Bordentown. The meeting will start with registration, coffee and donuts, followed by, a speaker, election of new officers and lunch. Featured speaker will be Dr. Deborah A. Delaney, Assistant Professor Entomology & Wildlife Ecology at the University of Delaware. The first place and division winners of the Annual Honey Show will be auctioned to the highest bidders following lunch. Cost is $20 in advance (if paid by January 21, 2012) per person 12 years and older for members ($25 at the door). Children 11 years and younger are $12.00 in advance. Cost for all non-members is $35. April 26, 27 & 28, 2012: Bee-ginner's Beekeeping Course at Rutgers. See the Education Page for details.

August, 2012: Date to be determined. Annual picnic and auction at the home of Bob Hughes in Yardville, NJ (Mercer County). Find used equipment bargains, sell equipment you no longer need, talk about bees all day, good food, good company and swimming! Coffee and donuts from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. followed by the auction, with the incomparable auctioneer, member Rod Donovan. Swimming pool, so bring suits and towels. Northeast Beekeepers Association of NJ Calendar  

The Northeast Beekeepers Association of New Jersey has a new home for 2012. They will meet on the third Friday of the month, in Room 135S (the Amphitheater) in the Anisfield School of Business, Ramapo College, 505 Ramapo Valley Road, Mahway. For directions, click here. new February 9, 2012: 7:15 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. Meeting at the Old York Cellars Winery. The meeting will center on a video featuring a master beekeeper instructing how to perform a split and the biological reasons why the split process works. Refreshments will be served. February 18, 2012: Saturday, general Membership Meeting, Sussex County Fairgrounds Administration Building, Plains Road, Augusta. Topic to be preparing for fair honey competitions by Angelo and Anna Trapani.

March 10, 17, 2012: Saturdays, "Introduction to Beekeeping" short course at the Sussex County Fairground Administration Building. Rain date March 24, 2012. Details on registering, cost and what the course includes will be posted on the Sussex website when available.

May 19, 2012 : Field day, hands-on spring management, location to be determined.

June 2, 3, 2012: Field day, local queen breeding. Rain dates, June 9, 10, 2012.

July 7, 29, 2012: Field days. Fair prep and honey harvest demonstration.

July 22, 2012: New Jersey State Fair - Sussex County Farm & Horse Show Booth Setup 1 meeting at the Sussex County Fairgrounds in the Richard's Building. Time to be determined.

August 2, 2012: New Jersey State Fair - Sussex County Farm & Horse Show complete Booth Setup.

August 3 through August 12, 2012: Sussex County Fair. (Sussex County Farm and Horse Show) Annual Honey Show judging on August 3, 2012. Bee information booth with bee products, observation hive and bee cage. Honey show entries due at Sussex Fairgrounds by 10:00 a.m., Friday, August 3, 2012. For entry form, classes and details will be posted when available.

September 16, 2012: 12:00 noon. Joint meeting with SENY. Bring a dish to share and a chair.

October 16, 2012: Honey Festival at the Fairgrounds.

Essex County Beekeepers Society (ECBS) meets at Essex County Environmental Center (ECEC) at 621B Eagle Rock Avenue in Roseland, NJ 07068.

newFebruary 18 & March 3 , 2012: Saturdays, Garibaldi Hall, Essex County Environmental Center, 621B Eagle Rock Avenue, Roseland, NJ 07068. Snow date March 17, 2012. Tentative Field Day in April, 2012 TBA. Basic Beekeeping short course. This course will take you through a full year of beekeeping, and teach you everything you need to get started, from equipment, through management, biology, pest control, and harvest. South Jersey Calendar  

Please note that South Jersey will also hold "Flash Meetings" periodically through the season at members' homes as opportunities arise. They will cover specific tasks and will be announcied to SJBA branch members with short notice via email. Attendance will be limited and require RSVP. Further details will be made available to branch members as they are available.

new April 7, 2012: 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM, “Waking Up Your Bees” at the home of Chris and John Hibbs, 4 Ridge Court, Medford 08055. We will be discussing yard maintenance, hive clean up and maintenance, assessment of the living and the dead hives, and planning for the next 90 days of the beehive.

new April, 2012: Exact date and time to be determined, “Installing Packages” at the 4-H Nature Preserve, 3944 So. Black Horse Pike (Rte 322), Williamstown 08094. We will be sending out e-mail notices when we know the date(s) that the packages will arrive. We will then install the packages into new hives that are being donated to SJBA for use by the Gloucester Co. 4-H program.

new May 12, 2012: 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM, “Splits” at Tim Stewarts bee yard, 187 9th Ave., Estell Manor 08319 (located behind the chicken coops). Tim will be showing how to set up your hives to easily do splits along with doing several splits.

new June 9, 2012: 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM, “Hive Inspections” at the 4-H Nature Preserve, 3944 So. Black Horse Pike (Rte 322), Williamstown 08094. This is our first general membership meeting at this location. We will be inspecting the hive packages that were installed there in April. We will also have a general question and answer session.

new July 14, 2012: 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM, “Honey Harvesting” at the home of Tom O’Keefe, 122 State Street, Glassboro 08028. Tom will be demonstrating proper selection of frames for harvesting, decapping techniques and using an extractor.

new August 11, 2012: 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM, “Getting Your Bees Ready for Winter” at the home of Eloise (Lou) Naylor, 209 Hickory Lane, Moorestown 08057. We will be discussing how to “take care of the bees that take care of the bees that go into winter” along with some feeding guidance and winter hive set-up.

new September 8, 2012: 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM, “Feeding” at the 4-H Nature Preserve, 3944 So. Black Horse Pike (Rte 322), Williamstown 08094. We will show various feeding methods, including winter emergency feeding. We will have multiple feeders available to look over and to get the pros & cons of each.

new October 2, 2012: “Bee in Shape” at the Gloucester County 4-H Center, 1200 N. Delsea Dr., Building A, Clayton 08312. Sheryl Markley will show us simple strategies to keep your body strong and prepare for safe spring hive handling. She will give some specific exercises to keep the core muscles and arms and legs strong, and demonstrate proper body mechanics for working with hives.

new November 13, 2012: 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM, “Gifts from the Hive: Candles” at the Gloucester County 4-H Center, 1200 N. Delsea Dr., Building A, Clayton 08312. Tom Sheppard will demonstrate getting your wax prepared and clean. He will also show various candle mold styles.

new December 4, 2012: 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM, Business of Beekeeping” at the Gloucester County 4-H Center, 1200 N. Delsea Dr., Building A, Clayton 08312. Stephen Kozachyn, SJBA 1st Vice President, will discuss setting up a business including a discussion on insurance.

Jersey Cape Calendar

January 20, 2012: 7:00 p.m. Membership meeting at the Kemmerer Library, 19 Blue Mill Road, Harding Township. (For GPS users the town could be listed as either New Vernon or Harding Township.) The topic will be "Winter Bee Feeding" presented by Charles Isley, president of the Northwest branch. For directions, click here.

February 17, 2012: 7:00 p.m. General membership meeting, Chester Library. A hive will be assembled, and where to locate your hive on your property will be discussed.

March, 2012: Chester Library. The topic will be spring feeding and, for our ambitious beekeepers, how to prepare your bees for Ross Rounds.

April, 2012: Short beekeeping course and a demonstration on hiving packaged bees for those members who have purchased pacakged bees through the branch.

July, 2012: Morris County 4H Fair, Chubb Park, Chester.

 
Raritan Valley Beekeepers Association Calendar  

Raritan Valley Beekeepers Association (RVBA) meets at 7:00 p.m. the third Thursday of the month at the Somerset 4H Building, 310 Milltown Road, Bridgewater, NJ 08807

January 19, 2012: 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Branch member Debbie Demmer will present "Experiments and Adventures of a Beekeeper"; a virtual trip to her bee yard; setting up equpiment to overwinter small hives; queen rearing in a homemade queen castle; combining, moving, splitting hives; feeders; bottom boards; homemade hive stand for multiple hives. Officer elections will be held following the one-hour presentation. Q&A if time permits. Coffee, tea and dessert will be served.
